Introduction
Just outside of Omaha, Nebraska, something truly special unfolds each year: The Heartland Gathering. Promising “slowness, soul, and something sacred,” The Heartland Gathering is far more than an event—it’s a space intentionally designed for presence, authentic dialogue, and deep human connection. At the heart of this extraordinary experience is Omani Carson, the visionary leader behind Omya, whose business acumen and leadership skills have long inspired me. His ability to blend strategic insight with a genuine commitment to uplifting others shaped every aspect of The Heartland Gathering, creating an atmosphere where meaning takes precedence over momentum.
I was reminded during this event that true leadership isn’t measured by titles or profits, but by the impact we have on others. It’s about building communities, fostering growth, and creating spaces where people can pause, reflect, and engage in ways that extend far beyond the boardroom. The Heartland Gathering exemplifies this kind of leadership, and after having the privilege of attending and speaking this year, I can confidently say it delivers on its promise—and so much more
The Heartland Gathering reinforced my deepest beliefs about the power of community and intentional connection, the very principles that inspired me to create The Exchange for finance professionals. It’s a place that pulls you out of the daily rush and invites you to reconnect with purpose, both personally and professionally. My time there was transformative, and it sparked a number of reflections. Here’s a glimpse into my experience and the lessons I’ll carry forward.
Notable Speakers
The Heartland Gathering brought together an impressive mix of thought leaders and trailblazers from a variety of fields, each with a unique message and tremendous insight. While there were many inspiring voices throughout the event, I’ve chosen to highlight just a few here whose perspectives sparked especially meaningful ideas for me and parallels to finance. I look forward to featuring even more of these remarkable speakers in the future, as their wisdom and bold thinking deserve a wider spotlight. I also hope to have them join or contribute to our community, enriching The Exchange with their diverse experiences and perspectives.
Raj Sisodia: Conscious Capitalism – Building a Legacy of Love and Leadership
Raj Sisodia, co-founder of Conscious Capitalism Inc. and a leading voice in purpose-driven business, delivered an inspiring talk titled “Conscious Capitalism: Building a Legacy of Love and Leadership.” Raj shared his vision of how businesses can become forces for good by integrating purpose, care, and humanity into their core, creating value not just for shareholders but for all stakeholders. His insights, drawn from years of research and experience, challenged the audience to rethink the role of leadership in building a better world.
Listening to Raj’s talk, I couldn’t help but reflect on the parallels to my own journey. While my focus has been on empowering financial organizations through data and innovation, the heart of it is the same—creating something that lasts, something that matters. Raj’s words were a reminder that leadership isn’t just about strategy or results; it’s about the impact we leave behind and the connections we foster along the way. It was a powerful moment of alignment and inspiration.
Zach Bush, MD: A Biologic Future for Global Economies
Dr. Zach Bush, a triple board-certified physician known for his groundbreaking work on the human microbiome, regenerative agriculture, and ecological well-being, spoke about the essential connections between human health, environmental renewal, and the broader systems that shape our world. Drawing from his background in both medicine and ecology, he emphasized how every system—biological, planetary, or financial—depends on ongoing adaptation and regeneration to remain healthy and resilient. His message resonated deeply with my own reflections: just as our bodies and ecosystems require continual renewal, so too must our financial systems embrace adaptability and interconnectedness to foster true sustainability and lasting impact. Just as Zach advocated for regeneration and adaptability, I see these principles as essential for evolving our industry and building a healthier future.
W. Bryan Hubbard and Former Governor Rick Perry: Ibogaine
W. Bryan Hubbard, together with Rick Perry, is a leading advocate for ibogaine—a psychedelic compound with promising results in addiction treatment and mental health recovery. Inspired by his own experiences, Bryan’s push for ibogaine reflects a willingness to challenge the status quo and explore unconventional solutions when traditional systems fall short. Hubbard has become a leading advocate for ibogaine—a naturally occurring psychedelic being explored as a breakthrough treatment for addiction and mental health conditions. Drawing from his personal and professional journey, Hubbard has taken on a national role alongside Rick Perry, who was also in attendance.
Perry discussed how he experienced a remarkable transformation—shifting from a staunch anti-drug stance during his tenure as governor to becoming an outspoken advocate for plant-based medicines like ibogaine. His openness to new evidence and willingness to challenge conventional thinking reflect a courageous move toward supporting solutions that address the root causes of addiction. For me, seeing such a shift echoed the evolution happening in finance: just as Perry is embracing new approaches in the face of persistent challenges, our industry must remain open to innovation, continually question old assumptions, and be willing to forge new paths when legacy systems no longer serve the greater good. Hubbard and Perry’s work highlights the importance of pursuing innovative, sometimes unconventional solutions where mainstream systems have failed, reminding us that meaningful change often begins with bold action.
The Future of Artificial Intelligence & Investing
At The Heartland Gathering, I had the privilege of leading a session titled “The Future of AI and Investing,” where I explored how artificial intelligence is fundamentally transforming our industry and reshaping how we approach investing, risk management, and decision-making.
One of the key points I addressed was AI’s ability to process massive datasets at incredible speeds, uncovering patterns and insights that humans simply cannot. From stock selection to algorithmic trading to risk assessment, AI is revolutionizing the way we analyze and act on financial data. However, I also highlighted its limitations, such as its struggle with “black swan” events and the risks of hallucination bias—when AI generates convincing but incorrect outputs. I also emphasized the importance of high-quality, unbiased data as the foundation for effective AI. Poor data quality and biases can skew AI’s predictions, while overfitting can result in models that perform well on past data but struggle in real-world scenarios.
These challenges highlight the need for human oversight when adopting AI’s data-driven insights because, as I see it, AI is a tool, not a crystal ball. While AI offers unparalleled analytical power, human intuition and contextual understanding remain essential for harnessing its power to navigate complexities and uncertainties with greater confidence and precision.
While my session focused on investing, AI was an ever-present topic throughout The Heartland Gathering. Many conversations went far beyond financial applications, considering the ethical and philosophical dimensions of artificial intelligence. The recurring theme was that AI is neither inherently good nor bad—its impact comes down to the consciousness, intentions, and ethical frameworks of the humans controlling it. These insights offered fresh motivation for leaders across industries to ensure that the evolution of AI remains grounded in human judgment, responsibility, and values. This topic will be explored in greater depth on The Exchange in the coming months, offering further insights into the evolving relationship between AI and investing.
Embracing Healing and Holistic Wellness
The Heartland Gathering stood out for its thoughtful integration of healing modalities designed to nurture both body and mind. Through experiences like sound healing, guided breathwork, immersive music, and holistic wellness sessions, participants were encouraged to slow down, reconnect, and restore balance in a truly supportive environment. These practices offered more than moments of relaxation—they opened doors to self-awareness, renewed energy, and creative inspiration, helping individuals reconnect to purpose and foster personal growth.
As a personal reflection, I attended a breathwork session during The Heartland Gathering that was nothing short of life-changing. Breath is something we often take for granted, yet it holds the power to transform our minds, bodies, and souls. Finnian Kelly, a renowned breath facilitator and Hay House author, has dedicated his life to unlocking this potential through his Intentionality framework—a method designed to help individuals access deeper states of presence, clarity, and emotional expression. At the heart of his work are his breath concerts, immersive experiences that blend conscious breathwork with evocative soundscapes, merging ancient wisdom with modern science to create profound journeys of self-discovery and healing. I can say, having experienced it firsthand, this was more than just a wellness session—it was a powerful experience that left me feeling grounded, open, and deeply connected.
After witnessing the profound impact of these approaches, I’m inspired to weave more wellness and stress management practices into The Exchange, supporting our community’s resilience and well-being in meaningful ways.
Experiencing Community and Connection
While the speakers and artists were phenomenal, the true magic of The Heartland Gathering unfolded in the moments between events. Attendees came from all walks of life, representing a wide variety of professions, backgrounds, and locations—each bringing unique perspectives yet united by a common goal to drive positive change. The intentionally collaborative environment encouraged conversations that often led to fresh perspectives and lasting relationships.
Throughout The Heartland Gathering, I connected with visionary entrepreneurs, healthcare pioneers, community builders, VC investors, artists exploring new mediums, educators passionate about experiential and holistic learning, wellness practitioners, and thought leaders from a variety of industries. These weren’t just casual introductions; they were meaningful exchanges that sparked new ideas and deepened our sense of community.
Conclusion: The Power of Community in Reshaping Our Industry
As I left The Heartland Gathering, I couldn’t help but feel a renewed sense of purpose. While I went to discuss AI and investing, what stayed with me was a deeper appreciation for the power of personal and collective growth. Surrounded by people committed to evolving and regularly pushing beyond their comfort zones, I was reminded that meaningful progress—of any kind—begins from within. Tolstoy said it best: “Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.”
That spirit carried into our community group chat, where a member of our group invited everyone to join him and his wife in a three-day fast. Many of us, myself included, accepted the challenge, and what started as a discussion about wellness, mental clarity, and discipline quickly evolved into a shared commitment. As a European (and a French one, fond of good food and wine), this was no small feat. Yet with the support and encouragement of others, I found myself leaning into the discomfort, discovering firsthand how stepping beyond familiar boundaries can fuel real growth—both individually and as a community.
This whole journey, from The Heartland Gathering to the fast and beyond, crystallized several lessons I’ll carry forward:
- Community is everything. Whether you’re building a business, a technology, or a movement, the people you bring together will ultimately determine your success. The support shown for a personal challenge like a fast is a powerful example of community in action.
- Change starts from within. The most meaningful progress—personally or collectively—begins when we are willing to look inward, embrace growth, and step outside our comfort zones. When we make changes on a personal level, those ripples of transformation can inspire others and spread outward.
- The big questions matter. It’s easy to get caught up in the “how” of technology and finance, but we can’t lose sight of the “why” and the “what if.” The most impactful conversations are often those that push us to think beyond our immediate tasks and consider broader implications.
- Stay curious. True growth often comes from the most unexpected places and people. A conversation about wellness can be as enlightening as a deep dive into AI. Openness to learning from every interaction is where transformation happens.
The Heartland Gathering was more than just an event—it was a catalyst that reinforced the core mission of The Exchange: fostering a space for exploration, challenge, and shared growth. Tolstoy’s words echoed throughout our time together—a reminder that while growth always starts within, it flourishes most when we uplift each other.
Together, we have the opportunity to transform The Exchange into a thriving community for financial professionals—one that evolves our industry by challenging the status quo and building a future that is as human as it is innovative, and as purposeful as it is profitable.
Here’s to that future, and having survived my first fast!
